SYDNEY, March 31 (UPI) -- Rod Allen, a well-known soccer columnist in Australia, was killed in an apparently accidental fall from a cliff this weekend, police said.

Allen, former sports editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, was apparently camping on the city's Cockatoo Island and somehow fell to his death early Saturday. The incident was under investigation.

Allen had been head of media relations for the Western Sydney Wanderers soccer team at the time of his death, after a long career covering the sport for the News Limited and Fairfax newspapers, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said.
