Haas continues success at Sony Open

MIAMI, March 28 (UPI) -- Tommy Haas kept alive his chances for what would be a special championship Wednesday by earning a semifinal berth at the Sony Open.

Haas, who stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic Tuesday, needed just 64 minutes to put together a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gilles Simon.

Third-seeded David Ferrer will take on Haas in the semifinals after fighting off Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Haas won a tournament in his native Germany last year and that was his first triumph in three seasons. He has a realistic chance to win this week at a Masters Series event with Djokovic eliminated and with neither Roger Federer nor Rafael Nadal in the tournament.

Haas has lost both his previous two matches with Ferrer, but the last of those came five years ago.

Two other quarterfinals will be held Thursday when Andy Murray meets Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych takes on Richard Gasquet.
