Hasselbeck signs with Colts
INDIANAPOLIS, March 19 (UPI) -- The Indianapolis Colts signed veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to a two-year, $8 million contract Tuesday, the team website announced.
The addition of the 14-year NFL veteran, to be the backup to Colts' starting quarterback Andrew Luck, had been speculated at owners' meetings Monday, the Indianapolis Star reported.
Hasselbeck, 38, was released by the Tennessee Titans earlier Monday for salary cap reasons. In his career he has passed for 34,517 yards, is a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has an 80-72 record as a NFL starter and led the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl XL in 2006, the newspaper said.
Suit says Browns' DL terrified family
MIAMI, March 19 (UPI) -- A North Miami Beach family is suing Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Desmond Bryant, saying he terrified them when he tried to break down their front door.
Bryant was arrested last month by Miami-Dade police and charged with criminal mischief for trying to break down the door at the home of Isaac Bakar, The Miami Herald reported Monday.
Police described Bryant as intoxicated and incoherent at the time of his arrest.
Bakar, his wife and three children were awakened about 5:30 a.m. Feb. 24 by a shirtless Bryant charging their front door, police said.
Bryant pulled a handle off the door as Bakar tried to hold the door closed.
"They were scared," says Baker's attorney, Robert Fiore, after filing the suit Monday in Miami-Dade circuit court.
Bryant, 27, is 6-foot-6 and 311 pounds. Bakar, a 43-year-old roofing contractor, is 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds.
Police said Bryant was "extremely intoxicated" after drinking at a South Beach nightclub when he took a taxi to what he thought was his condo in Aventura.
Bakar and Bryant do not know each other and they are not neighbors.
Bryant received a five-year $34 million contract from the Browns last week and afterwards apologized for the disturbance.
Hawks' cheerleader injured at game
ATLANTA, March 19 (UPI) -- An Atlanta Hawks cheerleader was taken from the court on a stretcher after falling and striking her head during Monday night's game in Atlanta's Philips Arena.
She slipped and fell during a routine between the third and fourth quarters of the basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.
Identified only as Cheerleader Kristen, she was taken by paramedics to Atlanta Medical Center, and was released after examination by physicians, the team said.
Jockey wins 5,200th race, then retires
BENSALEM, Pa., March 19 (UPI) -- Jockey Anthony Black won the 5,200th race of his career, aboard Smart Tori in the ninth race at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa., and promptly retired.
"The reality really hasn't sunk in, but I said I would and I am sticking with it," said Black, 61, whose first win came at Liberty Bell Park, a now-closed track in nearby Philadelphia, in 1970. Black was just out of high school at the time.
Black added, "The best part is I did it on my son's horse."
Smart Tori, owned by Black's son Anthony, paid $4.40 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show on Monday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
