
INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Maria Sharapova joined the quarterfinals field at the BNP Paribas Open Tuesday with a two-set victory of Lara Arrubarrena-Vecino of Spain.
The second-seeded Russian required 78 minutes to dispatch her opponent 7-5, 6-0 and earn a trip to the quarterfinals where she will take on sixth-seeded Italian Sara Errani.
Sharapova broke serve six times and scored five aces while toiling in the Southern California desert heat.
Errani, who lost to Sharapova in last year's French Open finals, advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 9 seed Marion Bartoli of France.
Top-seeded Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus moved up with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ursula Radawanska of Poland.
Fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova moved on by defeating fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-2, 6-3. Fourth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany also advanced as did the winner of the late match between No. 8 seed Caroline Wozniaki of Denmark and 10th-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova.
