Injured Vonn wins downhill crown

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland, March 13 (UPI) -- Lindsey Vonn of the United States and Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal clinched the World Cup downhill titles Wednesday when fog scrubbed the season's final races.

International Skiing Federation officials called off the men's and women's downhills at the World Cup Finals in Switzerland, giving the injured Vonn the title -- her sixth consecutive championship in the event -- by one point over Tina Maze of Slovenia.

Vonn won three of the seven World Cup downhills this season but missed two others due to a season-ending knee injury suffered at the World Championships. She had built up enough of a cushion to beat Maze by a nose.

Races in the finals are not rescheduled.

Svindal clinched his first men's downhill title by 58 points over defending champion Klaus Kroell of Austria. Svindal, who earlier claimed the super-G title, lost an opportunity to close the gap with Austrian Marcel Hirscher in the men's overall points race.

The World Cup Finals are scheduled to resume Thursday with the final super-G races of the season.
