COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 11 (UPI) -- Former Danish cyclist Michael Rasmussen told anti-doping authorities the Danish Olympic team was doping at the 2004 Olympics, a newspaper reported Monday.
Rasmussen admitted in January he had been using performance-enhancing drugs for most of his career, and was questioned by representatives of WADA, the international doping authority, the Copenhagen Post said.
It was at these interviews, the Danish newspaper Politiken reported, that Rasmussen implicated the entire team, explaining the smuggling of a syringe into the Olympic Village in Athens, Greece, to the apartment five Danish cyclists shared.
Jesper Worre, head of the Danish cycling authority and Olympic team leader in 2004, expressed shock at the pronouncement, saying, "We need to get to the bottom of this because it's absolutely insane if that actually happened."
