Ferrer, Nadal on collision course in Mexico

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed David Ferrer advanced Wednesday and second-seeded Rafael Nadal stayed sharp as they remained on a collision course at the Mexican Open.

Both players reached the quarterfinals with ease, having combined to win three titles and 27-of-30 matches in 2013.

Ferrer easily dispatched Wayne Odesnik in the second round 6-2, 6-1. Nadal, playing the last match of the night, got past Martin Alund 6-0, 6-4.

In the other second--round matches played Wednesday third-seeded Nicolas Almagro ousted Tommy Robredo 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), Fabio Fognini outlasted Aljaz Bedene 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) and Horacio Zeballos was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-3.

Ferrer will face Paolo Lorenzi in the quarterfinals after Lorenzi won over Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-3.

Nadal's quarterfinal opponent will be Leonardo Mayer, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Andrey Kuznetsov.
