PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers restructured the contract of linebacker Lawrence Timmons in a move to get under the NFL salary cap.

The deal with Timmons was concluded Tuesday. Although no details were announced, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said he is due a salary of $5.375 million in the upcoming season, and turning that contract into a $4 million bonus could save $3 million in cap space.

Restructuring the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is next on the Steelers' agenda, the newspaper said. His 2013 salary of $11.6 million could be turned into a $9 million bonus, spreading a $3 million annual cap deduction over three years. It would create $6 million in room under the cap, while Roethlisberger receives the full dollar amount of his contract.
