NHL: Washington 5, New Jersey 1

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin's 11th career hat trick powered the Washington Capitals to a 5-1 victory over New Jersey Saturday.

Ovechkin scored twice in a four-goal third period for the Caps, who had lost to the Devils Thursday.

Eric Fehr and Troy Brouwer also scored in the third period for Washington, and Mike Ribeiro had assists on two of Ovechkin's goals.

Ovechkin opened the scoring in the second period but Ilya Kovalchuk tied it 1-1 at 19:22 of the second.

Braden Holtby stopped 21 shots for the Caps.

New Jersey's Johan Hedberg made 21 saves but allowed all five Washington goals.
