Carolina came back from a one-goal deficit on three occasions, but they could not answer Wheeler's late tally.

Wheeler also scored 1:53 into the opening period, but Carolina tied it on a Jiri Tlusty tip-in with 1:21 to go before the first intermission.

It remained a 1-1 game until a flurry of scoring made for an entertaining third period.

Evander Kane and Andrew Ladd produced goals in the third for the Jets with Jordan Staal and Tlusty answering for the Hurricanes.

The win went to Ondrej Pavelec, who had 27 saves. Cam Ward stopped 19 shots for Carolina.
