

MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Tomas Berdych took a close three-set decision Wednesday from Ernests Gulbis in second-round play of the Open 13 tennis tournament in France.
Berdych got by Gulbis 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 6-4. He had just three break opportunities -- one in each set -- but won them all. He won more than 70 percent of the points on serve, losing one game in 16 turns serving.
Gulbis had 19 aces and took two-thirds of the points serving but only finished off the one break.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the quarterfinals by taking out Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 without facing a break point.
In other second-round matches, Bernard Tomic defeated Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 7-5 and Gilles Muller topped Marcel Granollers 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1) in a match in which there were no service breaks.
No. 6-seeded Gilles Simon was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Robin Haase while Julien Benneteau beat Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 and Dmitry Tursunov got by Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 6-3 in the final first-round matches.
