MAKHACHKALA, Russia, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- An Olympic medal-winning wrestler was hospitalized in Russia's Dagestan region after he accidentally shot himself in the stomach, officials said.
Bakhtiyar Akhmedov, who won a silver medal in the 120 kilogram division at Beijing 2008, accidentally shot himself Sunday in Makhachkala, Dagestan's capital, Russian sports news agency R-Sport reported.
"Bakhtiyar was driving and going about his business, and during the journey he picked up the pistol. Either he moved the bolt carrier, or he just picked it up, or just adjusted it in the holster because it was disturbing him. As a result, the pistol spontaneously shot him in the stomach," an official with the regional wrestling federation of Dagestan said.
