Hockey game suspended after seizure

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A minor league hockey game in Springfield, Mass., was suspended Sunday when player Wade MacLeod suffered a seizure on the ice.

MacLeod, of the American Hockey League Springfield Falcons, went into a seizure after being banged into the glass on a hit delivered by Adirondack Phantoms defenseman Brandon Manning in the second period at MassMutual Center.

The 26-year-old forward lay on the ice for several minutes, his legs flailing at times, before being stabilized and loaded onto a stretcher, The Springfield Republican reported.

McLeod, a former Northeastern University star playing his second season of professional hockey, was taken to Baystate Medical Center where the team said he was "stable and alert" following a medical procedure.

"We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming show of support for Wade tonight," MacLeod's family said in a statement. "Wade is alert, in good condition, in positive spirits, and is resting comfortably at Baystate Medical Center. He will remain at the hospital while he undergoes tests.

"We are deeply appreciative of all the caring and kind words we have received from family, friends, and fans."

The Falcons are the top farm club of the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets.
