Isner records victory in 2013 debut

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Second-seeded American John Isner reached the quarterfinals of the SAP Open Wednesday with a three-set win over Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Isner smashed 14 aces en route to a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Pospisil in his first match of the 2013 ATP Tour season after withdrawing from the Australian Open with a right knee injury.

In first round action at San Jose, unseeded U.S. veteran Michael Russell downed fellow American Donald Young 6-3, 7-5, earning the right to play top-seeded two-time defending champion Milos Raonic of Canada.

Meanwhile, Australia's Matthew Ebden dispatched South African Rik De Voest 6-2, 7-5, and Colombia's Alejandro Falla bested Italy's Flavio Cipolla 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (12-10).

Also Wednesday, American Steve Johnson got past Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
