SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Lleyton Hewitt rallied to win the second set Tuesday and edged Blaz Kavcicon of Slovenia 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the opening round of the SAP Open in San Jose.

Hewitt, representing Australia, also had to come from behind in the final set Tuesday to advance to the second round after laboring for 2 hours, 35 minutes.

"There were a lot of momentum changes throughout the match," said Hewitt. "He's a tough player and competitor out there. I was happy to get through it."

Denis Istomin advanced with a quick 6-3, 6-4 victory over qualifier Ryan Sweeting of the United States. Seventh-seeded Marinko Matosevic of Australia topped U.S. wild card Jack Sock 7-6 (5), 6-1.
