Nieminen wins first-rounder shutout

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Jarkko Nieminen capped Tuesday's play with a "double-bagel" win at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in the Netherlands.

Nieminen blanked David Goffin 6-0, 6-0 in an hour, winning nearly two-thirds of the points in the match. Nieminen won a slightly lower percentage of points (62-63) on serve than off Goffin's serve.

He did face three break points but kept Goffin off the scoreboard by finishing off half of his 12 break opportunities.

No. 2-seeded Juan Martin del Potro didn't drop serve in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gael Monfils. Del Potro lost only 14 points over 10 games serving.

Also in the first round Tuesday, local favorite Thiemo de Bakker advanced when Mikhail Youzhny retired with a hip injury after de Bakker built a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 4-1 lead. Julien Benneteau stopped Tobias Kamke 6-3, 6-2 and Ernests Gulbis was on the court just 50 minutes in a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Robin Haase.
