SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Mike Smith registered a 33-save shutout and made two more stops in a shootout Saturday, staking the Phoenix Coyotes to 1-0 decision over San Jose.

Smith was solid in regulation, especially in the third period, when the Sharks outshot the Coyotes 15-3.

After making three more stops in a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout, where the Phoenix goalie turned aside Michael Handzus and James Sheppard to wrap up the victory.

It was the second shutout of the season and 21st career whitewash for Smith.

Mikkel Boedker and Radim Vrbata put shots past San Jose's Antti Niemi in the tiebreaker, helping the Coyotes to their third win in four games.

Niemi, meanwhile, recorded his first shutout of the season and the 20th of his career, stopping all 21 shots he saw in regulation and the overtime.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Sharks.
