TOME, Chile, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- At least 12 people were killed Saturday when a bus carrying fans of Chile's top soccer teams drove off a mountainside road, officials said.

The driver of the bus -- which was carrying 45 fans of the O'Higgins soccer team, from the city of Rancagua -- lost control of the vehicle at about 2 a.m. near the town of Tome, CNN reported.

The fans had just attended a game in Talcahuano where O'Higgins defeated Huachipato, 2-0.

The bus plummeted almost 100 feet, said Felipe Martinez Parra, a regional police officer.
