Czechs outlast Swiss in Davis Cup doubles

GENEVA, Switzerland, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Defending Davis Cup champion Czech Republic took a 2-1 lead over Switzerland Saturday with a victory in an epic doubles match.

It took the Czech team of Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol 7 hours, 2 minutes to beat Marco Chiudinelli and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 in the second-longest match in Davis Cup history.

The Swiss, urged on by their home crowd, saved a dozen match points in the final set but eventually could not withstand the strong serving of both Berdych and Rosol.

The Czechs can advance to the semifinals in Sunday's reverse singles, which will pit Berdych against equally weary Wawrinka in the opening match.
