
NEW YORK, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots Thursday and picked up his first shutout of the season in carrying Pittsburgh to a 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers.
Vokoun is in his 15th NHL season, but his first with the Penguins and he provided a much-needed dominant performance in goal after Pittsburgh had dropped three of its previous four games.
It was the 49th shutout of his career.
Evgeni Malkin scored the only goal Vokoun needed just 1:24 into the game and it remained a 1-0 contest until James Neal tipped in a shot on the power play in the opening minute of the third period.
Simon Despres finished the scoring with 9:37 to play.
The Rangers saw their first two-game winning streak of the year come to an end. Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 26-of-29 shots for New York.
