CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Patrick Marleau erupted for two second-period goals Sunday and San Jose bested Calgary 4-1 in the opener of the lockout-shortened season for both teams.

Marleau's tallies came only 4 1/2 minutes apart and staked the Sharks to a 3-1 advantage.

Dan Boyle and Martin Havlat also scored, while Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton each logged two assists for San Jose, which fell to St. Louis in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Lee Stempiak recorded the only goal for Calgary, which finished out of the post-season in 2011-12.

Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 25 shots for the Flames.
