CLEVELAND, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Norv Turner, one of eight head NFL head coaches fired after the regular season, was hired Thursday as offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

Turner was dismissed by the San Diego Chargers and was given a job by one of his former assistants -- newly-hired Cleveland Coach Rob Chudzinski.

Chudzinski was assistant head coach and tight ends coach under Turner in San Diego during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Turner had a 56-40 record with San Diego, but the Chargers went just 7-9 this season. He has also been the head coach in Oakland and Washington.

Another of the head coaches who was dismissed at the close of the regular season, Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt, was also hired Thursday to be the offensive coordinator in San Diego.

He was selected by new San Diego Coach Mike McCoy, who was hired by the Chargers this week to replace Turner.
