ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Ireland's Paul McGinley Tuesday was named captain of the 2014 European Ryder Cup team by a unanimous decision of members in Abu Dhabi.

McGinley has served as Ryder Cup vice-captain twice, including last year when the Europeans pulled off a major comeback for an improbable victory at the Medinah course near Chicago.

"I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted to have this honor; to lead the European team, arguably the strongest in depth that we've had for the history of the European Tour," the 46-year-old McGinley said. "To be leading the cream of the crop in the Ryder Cup is going to be a huge honor."

The 2014 Ryder Cup is set for Sept. 26-28, 2014, at Gleneagles in Scotland.

The Irishman has participated for Europe in each of the last three Ryder Cups and is a four-time European Tour winner.
