Coach Kelly opts to stay at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Notre Dame head football Coach Brian Kelly said Saturday he will remain with the team after talking to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles about a job.
Kelly was interviewed for the Eagles' vacant head coaching job only hours after the Fighting Irish fell to Alabama in Monday's BCS National Championship Game, raising the possibility he could be leaving the school.
But Kelly issued a statement Saturday announcing he has chosen not to jump to the professional football ranks.
"This week, I had an incredible opportunity to speak with one of the premier organizations in sports about becoming their head coach," Kelly's statement read.
"Like every kid who has ever put on a pair of football cleats, I have had thoughts about being a part of the NFL. However, after much reflection and conversation with those closest to me, I have decided to remain at Notre Dame."
Kelly this year guided the Irish to an undefeated regular season, becoming just the second coach in team history compile 12 wins in a single season.
NHL players' union ratifies new labor deal
TORONTO, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The NHL players' union announced Saturday its members have ratified a collective bargaining agreement with the league, clearing the way for play to resume.
The NHL Players Association issued a statement indicating its members overwhelmingly approved the 10-year labor deal, three days after team owners issued a similar approval.
All that remains to end the 113-day lockout by owners and start a 48-game season Jan. 19 is for the two sides to initial a memorandum of understanding covering the one-week interim period.
"While the players' vote ratifies the new CBA with the NHL owners, a written memorandum of understanding consistent with what the players voted on, must be completed before the agreement becomes final," the union statement said.
"The NHLPA and the NHL continue their work to finalize the MOU."
Ninety-eight percent of players signed the measure, Canadian broadcaster RDS reported.
Training camps are expected to open Sunday with a schedule to be issued shortly thereafter.
Jamieson posts 5-shot South Africa lead
DURBAN, South Africa, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Scott Jamieson surged to a five-stroke lead with a 4-under 68 Saturday, grabbing control after three rounds of the Volvo Golf Champions.
The Scotsman is seeking his second European Tour title in a bit more than a month in Durban, South Africa, after also taking the Nelson Mandela Championship in December.
Jamieson's 68 Saturday enabled him to finish Round 3 at 15-under 201, good for a five-shot lead over Louis Oosthuizen, who had entered the day atop the leaderboard.
Oosthuizen's disappointing 2-over 74 left him in a three-way tie for second place with first-round leader Thongchai Jaidee (73) and Julien Quesne (67) at 10-under.
Padraig Harrington fired a 5-under 67 to charge into a tie for fifth at minus-8 with Francesco Molinari (68).
Former event champ Paul Lawrie claimed into a seventh-place tie one shot further back with Shane Lowry and Danny Willett. All three shot 70.
Milton Bradley hit with 13 violence counts
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Los Angeles prosecutors said former Major Leaguer outfielder Milton Bradley was being charged with allegedly repeated incidents of domestic violence.
Bradley was charged with 13 misdemeanor counts stemming from five alleged incidents involving his estranged wife in 2011 and 2013, the Los Angeles City Attorney's office said in a written statement.
Bradley, 34, faces arraignment in Van Nuys Jan. 24 on charges including vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon, the statement said. Specifically he was accused specifically of menacing his ex with a baseball bat and a knife in separate incidents.
Bradley spent 12 years in the Majors, including two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers during which time he got into an altercation with a sportswriter and threw a water bottle at some fans, the Los Angeles Times said.
The incidents resulted in Bradley being traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2005. His career ended in 2011 when he was released by Seattle.
