JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- David Caldwell will replace the fired Gene Smith as general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars, The Florida Times-Union reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said the former Atlanta Falcons director of player personnel was one of four candidates interviewed by Jaguars owner Shad Khan for the job.
Smith was fired Dec. 31 following the worst season in franchise history, in which Jacksonville went 2-14 and missed the playoffs for the fifth straight season.
Others reportedly interviewed for the Jaguars post were new Arizona General Manager Steve Keim, San Francisco's Tom Gamble and Marc Ross of the New York Giants.
