NHL and NHLPA reach tentative agreement

NEW YORK, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The National Hockey League and the players' union reached a tentative agreement early Sunday after a 16-hour negotiating session, officials said.

Negotiations began Saturday afternoon in a Midtown Manhattan hotel and ended with both sides announcing an agreement in principle to end a 113-day owners' lockout around 5 a.m. Sunday, the NHL said in a statement.

Once the agreement is ratified by the players and owners, a 48- to 50-game season is expected to begin before Jan. 20, The New York Times reported. The Stanley Cup would be awarded by the end of June.

Contract negotiations began Sept. 15, when the players' previous collective bargaining agreement expired. Negotiations were initially hospitable but became increasingly bitter as they dragged out to the point where the cancellation of the rest of the 2012-13 season was imminent.

Bettman had set a Jan. 11 deadline to reach a deal, under which the players' share of hockey-related income will reportedly drop from 57 percent to a 50-50 split.

Reports: Bills hire Marrone as head coach

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Syracuse University head football Coach Doug Marrone has been hired to lead the NFL's Buffalo Bills, ESPN and The Buffalo News reported Sunday.

Marrone will take over as Bills head coach less than a week after the firing of predecessor Chan Gailey, who compiled a 16-32 record over three seasons.

The 48-year-old former Syracuse mentor guided the Orange to a 25-25 record in four seasons, helping to turn around a team that was 10-37 prior to his arrival.

He finished his stint with Syracuse with a 38-14 victory over West Virginia in last month's Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Marrone has also served as offensive line coach for the New York Jets and as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2006-08.

The Bills also interviewed Oregon Coach Chip Kelly, former Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith, former Cardinals Coach Ken Whisenhunt and current Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, the News said.

Murray repeats as Brisbane champion

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- World No. 3-ranked Andy Murray repeated as the Brisbane International tennis tournament champion with a straight-set win Sunday over Grigor Dimitrov.

Murray overcame a game Dimitrov, who was appearing in his first ATP final, for a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 victory.

Murray dropped his first game on serve and saved a set point to force the tiebreaker, which he swept by finishing off the set with an ace. He fell behind again in the second set after Dimitrov broke in a 10-point game before taking the final three games of the match. That run included a pair of break points.

It marked the 25th ATP title in Murray's career, which is fifth most among active players.

Murray won $78,800 to go along with the championship. Dimitrov collected $41,540.

High winds force more Hyundai delays

KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Play at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions was scrubbed for the third straight day Sunday due to unrelenting high winds at Kapalua, Hawaii.

After Friday's brief round was erased and Saturday's play was called off without a shot being taken, officials had hoped to get in 36 holes Sunday and 18 more Monday.

But winds in excess of 40 mpg persisted Sunday, causing a 4-hour delay and ultimately another cancellation after five holes.

Jason Dufner led at 1-under before event officials decided wipe out the round.

Plans now call for 36 holes Monday and 18 more Tuesday, weather permitting.
