Govortsova logs 1st-round upset at Hobart

HOBART, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Belarusian Olga Govortsova opened the Hobart International tennis event with an upset Sunday, dispatching fifth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

Govortsova fought off three break-point tries by Navarro to emerge with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the Hobart International Tennis Center.

Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States bested Briton Laura Robson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the only other main draw match Sunday at the Australian Open tune-up event.
