DOHA, Qatar, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed David Ferrer finished strong Wednesday for a second-round win at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open tennis tournament.

Ferrer won six of the last seven games in a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Tobias Kamke. Ferrer won nearly two-thirds of the points on serve and five of the six break points he faced.

He had a pair of breaks in the first set and used a third-game break in the second set to build a lead and another break to get to 5-2 in the set.

As decisive as Ferrer's win was, No. 2-seeded Richard Gasquet was pushed to the very edge before coming out on top of a 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) decision over Grega Zemlja that took 2 hours, 44 minutes.

There were only three breaks in the match, with each player getting one in the final set to force the tiebreaker, where Gasquet took the win.

Gael Monfils, last year's tournament runner-up, eliminated third-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber with a 10-ace attack fueling a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win, and Nikolay Davydenko ousted No. 4-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 6-4 by not dropping serve. Lukas Lacko added to the upset string, beating sixth-seeded Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-5.

Also Wednesday, qualifier Daniel Brands got past Mohamed Safwat 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Paolo Lorenzi rolled over Lukas Rosol 6-0, 6-4; and Simone Bolelli was a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Lukasz Kubot.
