SEMMERING, Austria, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Anna Fenninger of Austria won Friday's women's World Cup giant slalom by a comfortable margin over second-place Tina Maze of Slovenia.

Fenninger impressed her Austrian countrymen lining the course in Semmering, Austria, by leading wire-to-wire for a combined time of 2 minutes, 13.9 seconds, a 1.1-second winning margin over Maze, the overall points leader this World Cup season.

Maze's second place extended her lead in the cup standings to 417 points over Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, who came in fourth Friday with a 2:14.76. Maze also leads the giant slalom standings with 540 points.

Tessa Worley of France placed third and Mikaela Shiffrin was the top U.S. finisher with an eighth place.

American Lindsey Vonn remained on the sidelines while recovering from a stomach illness that afflicted her in late November.
