Diskerud came off the U.S. bench shortly after that as the United States pushed to tie the score. Terrance Boyd fed Diskerud, who came out of a crowd with a shot that deflected into the goal 3 minutes into stoppage time.

Russia took the 1-0 lead when Fedor Smolov converted a U.S. defensive error in the ninth minute. The United States didn't break through until the 75th minute when Michael Bradley drove in the first tying goal.

Shirokov took the penalty kick after U.S. defender Clarence Goodson was called for talking down a Russian player for the second Russian lead.

The United States, which is ranked 27th, completed its 2012 campaign with a 9-2-3 record.
