NEW YORK, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Talks got under way Tuesday between the National Hockey League and locked-out players in New York, as union leader Donald Fehr expressed optimism.

The New York Times reported the talks were held somewhere in Midtown Manhattan.

"It's very good to be getting back to the table," Fehr said. "We hope that this time it produces more progress than we have seen in the past, and we can figure out a way to make an agreement and get the game back on the ice as soon as possible."

Season play has been canceled through the end of the month along with the Winter Classic.

Fehr said issues on the table remain the same, including reduction in player earnings from league revenues to 50 percent from the current 57 percent.
