MLS: Seattle 0, Real Salt Lake 0 (tie)

SEATTLE, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Michael Gspurning of Seattle and Nick Rimando of Real Salt Lake combined for 10 saves Friday in a 0-0 draw that opened their playoff series.

In the first leg of the two-match, aggregate score Western Conference semifinals, Seattle applied most of the late pressure in a bid to come away with a home victory.

Rimando was up for the challenge, however, making a series of spectacular saves and coming away with a cut over his right eye in a collision as he was depriving Seattle on one of its scoring chances.

The game was delayed for 8 minutes while Rimando was given medical attention and he eventually stayed in the game sporting a large bandage covering the cut.

The teams will meet again in Utah next Thursday with the winner of that one moving on to the conference finals. If that contest ends in a tie, there will be two 15-minute overtime periods that will be played to their conclusion.

If the game is still tied, penalty kicks will decide the outcome.

The playoffs continue Saturday with the first leg of an Eastern Conference semifinal series between D.C. United and New York. On Sunday Los Angeles and San Jose will start their conference semifinal series, as will Kansas City and Houston.
