Nets' 1st game in Brooklyn postponed

NEW YORK, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- The Nets' season-opener at their new home in Brooklyn will not take place Thursday as scheduled thanks to Hurricane Sandy, the NBA said Wednesday.

The Nets were to have played the New York Knicks at the just-completed Barclays Center but that game is now postponed indefinitely.

Instead, the Nets will have to wait until Saturday when they play host to Toronto to start their new era. The Knicks will play Miami Friday at Madison Square Garden.

The postponement comes a day after the NBA said the Nets-Knicks game would go on as scheduled.

"Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg informed us this afternoon that after further analysis of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy that he felt it was in the best interests of the city of New York, the teams and our fans that we postpone the Knicks-Nets game scheduled for Thursday night," NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating storm."
