NBA: Dallas 99, Los Angeles Lakers 91

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Darren Collision scored 17 points and O.J. Mayo had 12 Tuesday to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 99-91 opening-night win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Playing without Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks shot 47 percent from the field but still prevailed over the star-studded Lakers who were coming off an 0-8 preseason.

Elton Brand added eight points and 11 rebounds for Dallas. The Mavs bench contributed with 11-point performances by veteran Vince Carter and Rodrigue Beaubois.

Pau Gasol led Los Angeles with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Kobe Bryant had 22 and Dwight Howard scored 19 and had 10 boards before fouling out late in the game. Steve Nash scored seven points and registered four assists.

The Lakers shot 49.4 percent from the field but hit 3-of-13 3-point shots and was 12-of-31 from the free throw line.
