Detroit needs offensive in Game 3

DETROIT, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers, in desperate need of some offense, will try to work their way back into the World Series Saturday when they host San Francisco in Game 3.

San Francisco built a 2-0 lead in its home park, becoming the 52nd team in World Series history to capture the opening two contests. Of those, 41 have eventually become the champions. The New York Yankees were most recent team to overcome a 2-0 deficit, doing so in 1996 against the Atlanta Braves.

Detroit has managed three runs and 10 hits in the first two contests and two of those runs came in the ninth inning of Game 1 after San Francisco had built an 8-1 cushion.

The Tigers are counting on the home-field advantage they enjoyed throughout the regular season. Detroit had a 50-31 home record this year and has won all four of its home playoff games.

Although more hitting is needed, the heavy pressure will chiefly fall on Anibal Sanchez, Detroit's Game 3 starter. He posted a 9-13 record during the regular season and is 1-1 in this year's playoffs.

If Detroit can get past the Giants Saturday, the Tigers' hopes will be given a tremendous boost since they would have Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander ready for the next two games.

San Francisco, winner of the World Series two years ago, will send Ryan Vogelsong to the mound on Saturday. Appearing in the playoffs for the first time this season, he has a 2-0 record in three starts with an earned run average of 1.42.
