Love, Furyk share 3rd-round McGladrey lead

SEA ISLAND, Ga., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Davis Love III and Jim Furyk logged rounds of 4-under-par 66 Saturday to share the third-round lead of the McGladrey Classic at the Seaside Course.

Love earned a share of the lead thanks to a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.

That put him at 13-under 197 -- even with Jim Furyk, who carded eight straight pars to close the third round.

Sharing third place at minus-11 were D.J. Trahan (66) and second-round leader Arjun Atwal (69).


V. Williams, Niculescu in Luxembourg final

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- American Venus Williams will face off against Romania's Monica Niculescu for the title at the Luxembourg Open after both took semifinals victories Saturday.

The unseeded Williams -- who last won a singles title in February 2010 -- gained the championship match with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision over Germany's Andrea Petkovic.

Niculescu breezed into the final with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.

Williams will be seeking her 43rd career title while Niculescu will be making only her second finals appearance -- she lost to Victoria Azarenka in the Luxembourg title tilt last year.

Yankees' Jeter undergoes ankle surgery

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter underwent successful ankle surgery Saturday, the team said.

The likely future Hall of Famer will need four to five months to recover after the procedure performed by Dr. Robert Anderson of Charlotte, N.C.

Jeter sustained the injury Oct. 13 while fielding a ground ball in the 12th inning of New York's loss to Detroit in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees were swept in the series four-games-to-none.

Jeter batted .333 with two RBI in the playoffs before his injury, following a regular season in which he batted .316 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI.


Arizona picks up option on closer Putz

PHOENIX, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks said Saturday they closed the deal to keep J.J. Putz in their bullpen for another season.

The club picked up the 2013 option for their closer, who posted 32 saves and a 2.82 ERA in 57 appearances this year.

"J.J. has done a tremendous job for us over the past two seasons and is the leader of our bullpen," Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers said in a written statement. "We are looking forward to bringing him back in the same role next season."

Putz, 35, is 33-31 lifetime with 183 career saves and a 3.04 ERA in 10 seasons with four Major League teams.

He was 1-5 last season but converted 19 straight save opportunities and tied a team record with 24 consecutive scoreless innings.
