NEW YORK, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will need 4 to 5 months to recover from surgery on his broken left ankle, the team said Wednesday.

Dr. Robert Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., will operate on Jeter's ankle Saturday, the Yankees said.

The likely future Hall-of-Famer sustained the injury Saturday while fielding a ground ball in the 12th inning of New York's loss to Detroit in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees have lost twice more in the ALCS in their captain's absence, putting them on the verge of post-season elimination.

Game 4 was set for Wednesday night at Comerica Park in Detroit.
