Timberwolves' Love breaks hand, out 6-8 weeks

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Minnesota Timberwolves all-star forward Kevin Love is likely out 6-to-8 weeks after breaking his hand during a workout, the team announced Wednesday.

Timberwolves officials said Love -- the second-leading rebounder in the NBA last season with 13.3 boards per game -- fractured the third and fourth metacarpal in his right hand.

The fourth-year pro is set to visit hand specialist Dr. Andy Weiland in New York Thursday. Weiland performed surgery on Love's left hand in 2009 -- an injury that forced the Timberwolves forward to miss the first 18 games of that season.

Love posted a career high of 26.0 points per game last season -- fourth-highest in the league -- and was named to his second straight all-star game.

Ozzie Smith auctions off memorabilia

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Hall of Fame St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith is auctioning off more than 100 pieces of memorabilia, an auction house said.

Items up for bidding include Smith's numerous Gold Glove awards, 11 of his All-Star game rings and the two World Series rings the Cardinals gave him after the team's wins in 2006 and 2011. "The Wizard" was long retired by the time the team won its two most recent championships but he was given a title ring each time because he is a member of the team's Hall of Fame, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

SPC Auctions said Smith decided to put the memorabilia up for sale as part of his estate and family planning.

The auction, open to registered bidders, runs from Nov. 14 to Dec. 1 at SPCAuctions.com.
