Verdasco has upset win at Shanghai Masters

SHANGHAI, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Fernando Verdasco claimed a second-round upset victory Tuesday at the Shanghai Rolex Master tennis tournament.

Verdasco ousted seventh-seeded Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-2, dropping only 16 points over nine service games and saving both break points he faced. He also finished off three of his seven break chances.

Eighth-seeded John Isner survived a very tight match against Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (9-7). Isner won 120 points while Anderson took 117. They combined for 45 aces and won 78 percent of the points on serve.

Neither player managed a break in the 2-hour, 45-minute match, with Isner saving three break points and Anderson four, three of which came in final set.

No. 10-seeded Marin Cilic won nearly half the points in receiving serve in beating Martin Klizan 7-5, 6-1 in his second-round match. Cilic and Verdasco will meet in the third round.

No. 12-seeded Milos Raonic defeated Marinko Matosevic 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 with one break in each set of as first-round match.

Also in the first round, 13th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka edged Albert Ramos 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5); No. 14 Kei Nishikori beat Wu Di 6-2, 6-4; and 15th-seeded Gilles Simon beat Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2.

Other first-round winners Tuesday were Lu Yen-Hsun, Denis Istomin, Florian Mayer, Radek Stepanek, Marcos Baghdatis, Viktor Troicki and Feliciano Lopez.
