HOUSTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A left-knee injury has ended the season of Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing, Coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday.
Cushing tore the anterior cruciate ligament during the second quarter of the Texans' win over the New York Jets Monday night. Tests Tuesday morning confirmed the damage that Kubiak said will require surgery once the swelling subsides.
The 24-year-old defensive captain had 29 tackles and one interception in the undefeated Texans' first five games.
Cushing was Houston's 2011 MVP after leading the team with 114 tackles.
"[It's a]) big blow to our team," Kubiak said. "You feel bad for Brian because he works so hard and was playing so well."
Tim Dobbins is likely to start in place of Cushing, with Bradie James filling in on passing downs, and Mister Alexander and Jesse Nading also in the mix.
