Shanahan: Griffin seems OK after hit

ASHBURN, Va., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is "feeling good" after suffering a concussion, head Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday.

Griffin sustained the concussion during Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons on a hit to the head by Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

He was taken out of the game at that point, but on Monday showed no signs of post-concussion symptoms, the coach said.

Griffin was experiencing "no dizziness, no headaches, and no vomiting," Shanahan told reporters.

"We're going to go through the process with Robert, hopefully there is no setback and he's ready to go" for the Redskins' next game against Minnesota, he added.

Woods apologized to Ryder Cup teammates

ANTALYA, Turkey, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods said Monday he apologized to his U.S. Ryder Cup teammates for not doing more to prevent Europe's comeback win in this year's event.

Woods, speaking to reporters in Turkey where he's competing in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final, said he issued the apologies to rookie teammates Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley after the United States blew a big lead in the final round of the Sept. 28-30 event.

Woods said he regretted he wasn't able to win his team match with partner Steve Stricker against Europeans Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia on the second day, which would have given the Americans a big enough lead to weather Europe's third-round rally, ESPN reported.

The Americans' 10-6 advantage after Round 2 dissipated and they ended up losing 14 1/2 to 13 1/2.

"I had an opportunity to earn three points in team sessions and didn't do that," the world No. 2 said. "My point [in the singles] didn't matter when all was said and done. Steve Stricker and I were sent out to win points and we didn't do it. That was frustrating."

Injured QB's teammate blasts Chiefs fans

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Eric Winston said Monday he was "sickened" by local fans who cheered when the team's quarterback sustained a head injury.

Signal-caller Matt Cassel had become unpopular with fans while struggling as the Chiefs' quarterback since taking over the job in 2009.

Cassel was knocked out of Sunday's 9-6 loss to Baltimore in the fourth quarter when he suffered a head injury on simultaneous hits from two defenders.

Kansas City fans erupted in derisive cheers -- apparently over the prospect of his absence -- as he wobbled off the field under his own power, The Kansas City Star reported.

That angered Winston, who told reporters Monday the fans had crossed the line of decency.

"We are athletes. We are not gladiators," he told the newspaper. "This isn't the Roman Coliseum."

He acknowledged fans are entitled to express themselves, "but when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don't care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel, it's sickening. It's 100 percent sickening.

"I've been in some rough times on some rough teams. I've never been so embarrassed in my life to play football than at that moment right there."

Oregon State QB Mannion out indefinitely

CORVALLIS, Ore., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Oregon State starting quarterback Sean Mannion is set to undergo knee surgery and will be out indefinitely, head Coach Mike Riley said Monday.

Mannion, who had sparked the 14th-ranked Beavers to a 4-0 start, was hurt while handing off during Saturday's win over Washington State.

The sophomore played the entire game, but a subsequent magnetic resonance imaging exam after practice Monday revealed a knee injury, the coach said.

"It's very disappointing for the young man," Riley said. "He's invested a ton and he's going to miss some time."

The coach wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the injury.

Mannion was averaging 339.5 passing yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions per game.

Junior Cody Vaz was named the starter behind center for Saturday's contest against Brigham Young.
