MLB: Washington 3, St. Louis 2

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Rookie Tyler Moore delivered a pinch-hit, go-ahead single Sunday and Washington took the opener of its National League playoff series, 3-2 over St. Louis.

Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, the Nationals scored two unearned runs to grab the late advantage.

An error by St. Louis shortstop Pete Kozma allowed Michael Morse to reach base in leading off the decisive frame. He went to third when Ian Desmond followed with a single off Mitchell Boggs (0-1).

Danny Espinoza's sacrifice bunt moved Desmond to second, but Boggs fanned Kurt Suzuki for the second out.

Marc Rzepczynski relieved and pinch-hitter Moore greeted him with a flair hit to left that dropped in front of Carlos Beltran, sending two runs home.

Ryan Matthueus (1-0) worked out of bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh to earn the victory as the Nationals earned the first post-season win in their Washington history and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the NL Division Series.

John Jay got the only RBI for NL wild card-winner St. Louis.
