AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Barbara Ann Scott, the Canadian figure skater who won a gold medal in the 1948 Olympics, died Sunday at her Florida home, the Ottawa Sun reported. She was 84.
Scott, a two-time world champion, was a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and an officer of the Order of Canada. She was Canada's top female athlete in 1946, 1947 and 1948.
"I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Olympian and Ottawa's sweetheart Barbara Ann Scott. She was a wonderful person [and] will be missed," Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said. "She was the epitome of class and grace."
Scott married publicist Thomas King in 1955. They lived in Chicago for many years and relocated to Amelia Island, Fla., in 1996.
