NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- NHL contract talks resumed Friday with the league and its players trying to clean up minor details before tackling the issues that threaten the upcoming season.
Further talks were scheduled through the weekend.
"We had good discussions," said Mathieu Schneider, special assistant to the players' association executive director. "We had agreements on some things. We've certainly made some headway.
"We have a lot of mutual ground that we found agreement on."
Those agreements dealt chiefly with health and safety concerns along with drug testing. Economic issues, however, were not brought to the table Friday.
In the previous contract the players received 57 percent of the hockey revenue. The owners are reportedly trying to reduce that number to 47 percent.
NHL players were locked out by league owners two weeks ago when the previous collective bargaining agreement expired. The entire preseason schedule has been wiped out and the opening week of the regular season will likely be called off next week if no new agreement is reached.
