Verdasco lost his serve three times in the first set but rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 decision over Tatsuma Ito. He fought off all five of the break points he faced in the second and third sets in turning the match around.
Sixth-seeded Viktor Troicki dropped a first-set tiebreaker but was able to advance by beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-3. He lost his serve at least once in each set but countered with six breaks on the day.
No. 7-seeded Jarkko Nieminen and No. 8 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez had easier times reaching the second round. Nieminen took the first set 6-1 and Yuichi Sugita retired before the second set started. Garcia-Lopez won 60 percent of the points when receiving serve in a 6-0, 6-2 romp over Bernard Tomic.
Also Tuesday, Hiroki Moriya got past Robin Haase 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3; Donald Young defeated Lu Yen-Hsun 5-7, 6-2, 7-5; Dudi Sela beat Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 6-4; and Grigor Dimitrov edged Yang Tsung-Hua 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7).
