MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Denard Span doubled in two runs in Minnesota's 5-4 win over the New York Yankees Tuesday.

The loss was New York's second in three games, but the Yanks remained 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Baltimore in the AL East.

Span drove in two of the four runs the Twins scored in the seventh inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and nail down their third win in four starts. Joe Mauer also drove in a run in the seventh with a single, one of his three hits in the game.

Casey Fein (2-1) picked up the win with an inning of relief work. Glen Perkins gave up a pinch-hit home run to Andruw Jones in the ninth but held on for his 15th save.

Nick Swisher and Russell Martin also homered for the Yankees. Phil Hughes (16-14) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 6 /23 innings.
