Wozniacki wins in Tokyo on short rest

TOKYO, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Last week's WTA winners Caroline Wozniacki, who won Monday, and Hsieh Su-Wei, who didn't, had tough three-set matches at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

One day after winning the KDB Korea Open final, Wozniacki was on the court for first-round play of the tournament in Japan battling Bojana Jovanovski. Wozniacki came away a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 winner but it took 2 hours, 17 minutes to complete.

Hsieh won the Guangzhou International Women's Open in China Saturday and drew Klara Zakopalova in Tokyo. Hsieh fought off a pair of match points in the second set but managed to take just one game in the third set of what ended up to be a 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1 win for Zakopalova.

Wozniacki, the No. 10 seed, was one of six seeded players to claim first-round wins Monday.

Ninth-seeded Marion Bartoli stopped Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-1, 6-4 with a pair of breaks in each set while No. 11-seeded Ana Ivanovic built a 6-3, 2-0 lead before Andrea Hlavackova retired with a thigh injury.

Also, No. 15-seed Kaia Kanepi, the runner-up to Wozniacki in Seoul, defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1, 6-4; Lucie Safarova, the 16th seed, got past Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 7-6 (7-3); and 17th-seeded Nadia Petrova beat Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-4.

Qualifiers Pauline Parmentier, Heather Watson, Johanna Larsson and Jamie Hampton all claimed first-round wins Monday. Other players moving into the second round were: Julia Goerges, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Zheng Jie, Tamira Paszek, Daniela Hantuchova, Urszula Radwanska, Francesca Schiavone and Simona Halep.
