Petzschner dispatched local wild-card entrant Peerakiat Siriluehaiwattana 6-1, 6-2 in a brisk 57 minutes. It was the only main-draw match on Monday's schedule.
Petzschner won about two-thirds of the points in the match and piled up six breaks in eight receiving games. He did lose his serve once early in the second set after a first set in which he lost only three points on serve.
He was especially successful on receiving second serves, taking 15 of the 21 points when Siriluehaiwattana needed a second serve.
Janko Tipsarevic, who opted to play in Bangkok rather than defend his 2011 Malaysian Open title in Kuala Lumpur this week, is the top seed for the Thailand Open. Tipsarevic and the other top seeds -- Richard Gasquet, Milos Raonic and Gilles Simon, all received first-round byes.
The tournament carries a $551,000 purse, of which nearly $100,000 goes to the winner.
