MIAMI, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The general manager of the Miami Dolphins says he regrets using an obscene word to describe an upset fan during the team's Sunday game with the Oakland Raiders.

Jeff Ireland said he became irritated when the fan said he should "fire himself," the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Wednesday.

The fan, identified only as "Sean," called a local sports radio station Tuesday to report he spoke to Ireland during half time as Ireland was returning to his suite. Sean said he complained about the team's poor performance and suggested Ireland fire himself.

Ireland patted the man on the back and told him "good suggestion," then turned and walked away. As Ireland left, the fan said he heard the general manager call him an "a..hole" under his breath. However, the comment was loud enough for others to hear, the newspaper said.

Ireland, who was doing a recap of the game at the station when Sean called, confessed to the deed and expressed remorse.

"At the time I felt I handled the situation privately, but I probably spoke a little too loud," he said. "I regret that I said anything."
