The French crowd favorite won the title last year with a defeat of former titlist Ivan Ljubicic in the finale.

Also reaching the third round was fourth-seeded German Florian Mayer, who rallied for a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4 decision over American James Blake.

First-round triumphs were notched Wednesday by No. 5 Andreas Seppi of Italy, American Jesse Levine, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller and German lucky-loser Michael Berrer.
